As the world at our fingertips continues to expand, it can feel increasingly difficult to unplug and truly switch off from our always-connected daily life. Making a conscious effort to recharge and disconnect is vital for our wellbeing, yet it is often easier said than done. Finding the right destination can make all the difference. Nestled in a corner of South Wales, Gower Peninsula (or Penrhyn Gŵyr in Welsh) is the perfect place to press the reset button, providing a haven from the fast-paced buzz of modern life.

Gower was the first place in the UK designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and, once you’ve been, it’s easy to see why. From sandy beaches to salt marshes, dramatic cliffs to wooded valleys, and traditional villages to open rolling hills, Gower is largely free from modern development. That’s not to say there is nothing to do. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to be bored here. Here are just a few of our favourite ways to explore and experience all Gower has to offer:

Surfing

As anyone who has been on a surfboard before will tell you, catching a wave is a brilliantly unique feeling. The sense of freedom felt while being moved purely by a combination of the ocean’s forces and your own efforts is nothing short of magical. Complete newbie to surfing? Gower has a brilliant array of surf spots for all levels with plenty of access to expert tuition. Whatever your level, surfing is a powerfully immersive experience, allowing you to effortlessly disconnect from daily stress. Moving with the waves while breathing in the revitalising sea air will leave you feeling present and more connected with nature.

Beach Yoga

With a gorgeous long sandy beach as the backdrop and rhythmic waves setting the soundtrack, yoga on Gower’s Rhossili beach is a tranquil experience like no other. Often regarded as one of the best beaches in the world, Rhossili beach can rival the crème de la crème of beaches featured in holiday brochures – minus the industrial level of sun loungers, beach clubs and stalls selling tourist tat. In comparison, Rhossilli is an idyllic peaceful sanctuary, and, when combined with the mindful practice of yoga, provides the perfect conditions to deeply connect with your body and mind.

Hiking

Away from daily distractions, there’s nothing that invites creativity and mental clarity quite like a hike in nature. From stunning coastal paths to secluded woodland walks, there is an abundance of exceptional hiking trails in Gower. A firm favourite is the Three Cliffs Bay loop. You’re bound to feel serene as you follow paths that meander through wooded valleys, enjoy dramatic views of the historic Pennard castle, and soak up the gorgeous sandy beach and limestone cliffs of Three Cliffs Bay. Every worthwhile hike is followed by a good meal, so why not take a short drive after to the King Arthur Hotel for a fantastic pub lunch in their beautiful outdoor beer garden?

Coasteering

Moving along the coastline in and out of the sea offers a truly unique perspective of the stunning surrounding environment. Even before you reach the starting point of the coasteering route, you’ll wander past the majestic wild Gower ponies. And once down at the sea, keep your eyes peeled and you’ll likely catch sight of a curious seal or porpoise. It’s impossible not to become fully absorbed in the moment as you and your group encourage each other to tackle jumps that sit in that sweet-spot of self-growth at the edge of your comfort zone. Our friendly Big Blue Adventures team brings confidence-giving energy, as well as infectious enthusiasm – empowering you to enjoy the shared sense of accomplishment that strengthens bonds between your group. You’ll leave with an increased sense of self-assurance which will flow positively into the rest of your life.

Beach Clean-Up

Why not help preserve and protect Gower’s ecologically rich and valuable environments by giving something back during your visit? Addressing plastic pollution is one of the biggest global challenges of our time. A beach clean is a great way to have a direct and immediate positive impact on local ecosystems while feeling the benefits of being out and about in the fresh air. Big Blue Adventures is part of the Ocean Network, a Surfers Against Sewage movement dedicated to protecting the UK’s coastal environments. While the issue of plastic pollution is on a global scale, taking local actions can make a real difference to the immediate environment and help raise awareness, with the aim of inspiring further action.
